The Biden-Harris Administration, through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), today announced nearly $74 million in funding from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for 10 projects to advance technologies and processes for electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling and reuse. Since President Biden took office, more than 1.2 million EVs have been sold in America—more than triple the number of EVs on the road before he took office—and the rate of EV adoption continues to grow at a rapid pace.

This investment will support projects that strengthen and diversify the lithium supply chain—an important step on the path to achieving the Biden Administration’s goals of a net-zero clean energy economy by 2050 and 50% electric vehicle adoption by 2030.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has been designating alternative fuel corridors since 2016, and as of July 2022 there were 75,820 miles of electric vehicle (EV) charging corridors throughout the United States. California and Florida each have over 6,000 designated miles, while Texas and Colorado each have over 3,000. General Motors makes a big deal out of the Ultium battery technology underpinning its new and upcoming electric vehicles like the Cadillac Lyriq, GMC Hummer EV and the Chevrolet Silverado EV pickup. But the GM EV that’s a hit with customers right now is, ironically, the Bolt, a model that was first introduced back in 2016 and that doesn’t use the new Ultium battery packs GM boasts about in its newer models.
